Nos Importa. We Care.

As early as 2030, Maverick and Central Square and assets like MBTA Stations, Piers Park, and waterfront and housing authority properties will experience extreme storm flooding due to climate change. Through the ClimateCARE program, NOAH (Neighborhood of Affordable Housing) is taking action to get East Boston ready.

Clean your basement

Many basements collect years’ worth of clutter — so what happens when a flood adds to the mess? Not only could you lose your belongings, you could have a serious health and safety risk on your hands, as many households unknowingly have toxic objects stored in their cellars. Cleaning out and flood-proofing your basement is a surefire way to protect yourself, your family, your neighbors, and your belongings from hazardous mold or toxins.

How can I prepare my basement?

  • Move your personal belongings and valuables to a safe, above-ground space.
  • Take stock of and remove any potentially toxic materials. See the full list of hazardous materials at the Department of Public Work's page.
  • Remove mold-friendly surfaces (like paper, cardboard, fabric) or furniture, and consider installing mold-resistant walls and relocating vulnerable infrastructure (like electrical wiring).

Make a flood plan

A flood can strike within days or even hours notice — are you ready with a plan to keep your family and your business safe? Creating a flood plan in advance allows your family, business, or community respond quickly and make smart decisions to protect lives and property in the event of a flood nearby.

A flood plan can give you extra critical time and prevent confusion as to where to go, who to call, and what to protect.

What goes into a flood plan?

  • Know your closest evacuation center
  • Sign up for emergency alerts from the City of Boston. You can receive alerts in various languages (if you do not want to link/use your social media page to sign up simple select the option that says "NO, I would like to review and submit my information")
  • Prepare an emergency flood kit including a first aid kit, flashlights, waterproof blankets, water and food. Take stock of valuables, equipment, and sentimentals that must be raised to higher levels.
  • Discuss a plan for contacting family members and others in an emergency, and safeguard important documents including personal ID and insurance policies.Learn more about creating a flood plan at the Boston Public Health Commission's page.

Tree Planting

Our youth organizers are helping get and maintain more trees in our neighborhood, which help reduce heat, provide shade, and help absorb water in case of rain, and reduce our carbon footprint by absorbing carbon dioxide. Get a tree on your sidewalk, or help us maintain current trees by contacting us or signing up.

How can I help?

  • Request a tree
You can request a tree in front of your home if you don't currently have one by calling 311. It usually takes a few months, depending on the time of year when you request. Tree planting is contingent on your sidewalk meeting the size requirements (a wheelchair must stil be able to pass by with a tree planted).
  • Be a water provider
You can volunteer to provide water to our N-YO tree maintenance crew so they can take care of Eastie's trees by emailing Melinda Vega or calling 617-418-8243.
  • Adopt a Tree
You can volunteer to "adopt a tree" near your home, and you'd be in charge of taking care of it by: checking on it regularly, watering it, adding mulch if needed and removing trash around it. Volunteer by emailing Melinda Vega or calling 617-418-8243

This map, created by N-YO, shows all the new trees that were planted by the City of Boston in 2017 in collaboration with NOAH.
