Children's Summer Programs

NOAH currently runs two summer programs in East Boston that provide children with the opportunity to engage in fun and educational outdoor activities. These programs are vital to the community, as the shortage of green/recreational space in parts of East Boston and limited number of summer programs means that many local children do not have the same opportunities for safe, outdoor recreational activities as children in other sections of the City and surrounding towns.

The O’Donnell Schoolyard Summer Program

Each summer, the O'Donnell Schoolyard Summer program provides the opportunity for up to 200 local children to spend their summer in a healthy, active and productive way. The children enjoy the seven-week, five day program while also benefiting from participation in a multi-cultural, bilingual, and educational environment. Free breakfast and lunch are served each day. The mission of the program is to teach inclusion, respect of others, respect for differences, teamwork, socially acceptable behavior, self-confidence, active lifestyles, healthy eating and drinking, self-discipline, critical thinking, positivity, nonviolent communication and actions for problem solving, and honesty. The program focuses on encouraging youth to develop healthy relationships with one another and to resist negative effects of peer pressure, and fosters healthy psychological and physical development.

Soccer Program

NOAH has been sponsoring soccer at the American Legion Field since 2006. This bilingual soccer program is particularly important in East Boston, where the growing population of South and Central Americans are avid soccer players. Through permits sanctioned by the local government, our program provides an opportunity for many community members to play this favorite sport. With support from the Boston Community Grants Program, we developed and formalized this program to serve middle school age youth during the summer months. This expansion of the program was especially timely because the East Boston Academia de Futbol, the main soccer program for children in the community, had recently closed. Youth participants are enthusiastic about the program, and every year since its creation, NOAH’s soccer program has become more popular, serving 65+ children and their families each year.
